Merko is long serving mayor of Municipality of Struga, ex-minister and MP, and a key figure of the DUI, a party that is in power since 2008. Merko also own a controversial university in Struga, often mentioned as a diploma’s factory. This public designation is made under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2023. He stills remain in his position as mayor of Struga.
